Junior Miss is a competition held each year at the local, state, and national levels to provide scholarships to outstanding college-bound young women.  Participants are judged on Interview (25%), Scholastics (20%), Talent (25%), Physical Fitness (15%) as demonstrated in the performance of an on-stage aerobics routine, and Self-Expression (15%) as demonstrated on-stage via a graceful dance routine and onstage answer to a question.

Typically the Shelby County program is held the last weekend in July, just prior to the start of the girls' senior year in high school.  The winner of the Shelby County Junior Miss program goes on to compete in the Alabama Junior Miss program, held annually in Montgomery in January.
